Prevent condensation and mold growth in reservoirs

"You can really see the difference, it's completely dry now!"

User case
Drinking water reservoirs, which store a food product, frequently face moisture challenges. This can lead to mold growth, corrosion, and damage to instruments and equipment.

QUICK FACTS

Background

Reservoirs for drinking water, which is a food product, frequently present moisture-related challenges. This can result in mold growth and corrosion, as well as damage to instruments and equipment, ultimately driving up maintenance costs. During parts of the year, the facilities are cooled by cold raw water from the bedrock, which often elevates relative humidity levels as warmer, humid air is ventilated inward.

Evaluation

During the initial site visit, measurements identified several locations with excessively high humidity levels. Corrosion occurs when relative humidity exceeds 60%. Damage was easily identified on multiple pipes, pipe fittings, and sections of walls. When moisture penetrates reinforced concrete, there is also a risk of spalling as the reinforcement corrodes.

A decision was made to run a trial, and one FLEX and one REX unit were installed. Installation is straightforward as no complex ductwork is required—only an electrical supply and condensate drainage. The purpose was to demonstrate the performance benefits of using a dehumidifier.

After 2 months, new measurements were taken, and a reduction in moisture levels of over 10% was observed.

Investment

A subsequent decision was made to invest in several additional FLEX units and one REX. A pair of the FLEX units are controlled via external sensors (dew point control), ensuring that the temperature of the coldest surface dictates the optimal relative humidity in the air.

Benefits of using Airwatergreen's products versus doing nothing?

The trial confirmed that dehumidifiers were necessary to properly resolve the moisture issues. Ventilation alone is ineffective and risks exacerbating humidity levels, particularly during the summer months.

The fact that the dehumidifier maintains its efficiency down to sub-zero temperatures is a major advantage. The straightforward installation process and low energy consumption made the decision easy!
