The Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) has granted financial support in the form of a grant to Acanova AB, Airwatergreen AB, and Nordamark AB for the implementation of the project "LEST is more! – Lower Energy Steam Treatment in food industry".
The aim of the project is to demonstrate a more energy-efficient process for steam treatment of food seeds and sowing seeds. The project is considered to contribute to the transition of the energy system, as the solution's treatment equipment can lead to energy savings for multiple stakeholders within indoor cultivation. The Swedish Energy Agency also assesses that the solution has potential for climate benefits, as it can lead to reduced food waste, more natural disinfection of crops, and increased yields.
In the 2000s, Acanova developed ThermoSeed, a steam treatment method for food and sowing seeds. The method is state-of-the-art in Scandinavia, is installed in France, Switzerland, the USA, and Japan, and was named the top innovation during SLU's first 40 years as a university in 2020.
Our partner is Nordamark AB, which has developed and markets a patented technology for the production of sprouts, shoots, and microgreens (a rapidly growing market).
Airwatergreen's air treatment products are based on proprietary, patented technology that offers a range of unique advantages. All products feature uniquely low energy consumption, remain efficient even at low temperatures, and are extremely easy to install. In this project, Airwatergreen Controlled Vapor Pressure (CVP) technology will be used to maintain optimal humidity and temperature levels during seed processing, ensuring maximum quality and efficiency throughout the process. CVP technology makes it possible to maintain a stable indoor climate with uniquely low energy consumption.
